- An army unit that trained at Camp Howze and North Texas State Teachers College, the former name for the University of North Texas, was honored at the University in the summer of 1997. The University of North Texas hosted a memorial service that was dedicated to 10 former students who were killed in action during World War II. Four fellow survivors returned to UNT to honor their fellow class members. It was described that a plaque, honoring the 10 members of the Army Specialized Training Unit 3890 who died, would be unveiled at the event and on permanent display in the Union building at UNT.
